Wembley Final is a 'Special Occasion' - Gerrard It may seem remarkable that Steven Gerrard, a man with two Community Shields, and as many FA Cups and League Cups under his belt, has never played in a domestic final at Wembley Stadium. However, the midfielder will get the opportunity to re-write his history when Liverpool take on Cardiff City in the final of the Carling Cup. It will be the first time that Gerrard has featured in a Liverpool final at a venue other than the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. The Reds claimed their place at Wembley with a rousing victory over Manchester City, last Wednesday. Liverpool found themselves down by a goal on two occasions, as Nigel de Jong and Edin Dzeko unpicked the Reds defence. However, a penalty from Gerrard and a heroic effort from Craig Bellamy in the 74th minute tied the scores at two-all. Liverpool's 1-0 success in the first leg at Eastlands meant that Gerrard's side triumphed 3-2 on aggregate. Cardiff entered their semi-final match with Crystal Palace a goal down on aggregate and the underdogs on the betting line, but an incredibly poor clearance (and subsequent own-goal) from Anthony Gardner quickly erased the Londoners' advantage. Cardiff piled on the pressure over the next 83 minutes, but their perseverance was ultimately fruitless, despite a superb display from Kenny Miller. The home side, Cardiff, triumphed 3-1 in the ensuing penalty shoot-out, to become the first second-tier team in a Carling Cup final in more than a decade. Speaking about this weekend's clash, Gerrard said that leading Liverpool out onto the hallowed Wembley turf will be a special occasion. It has been too long for this club to not be in a major cup final, so it is nice to finally get there. The England player added that the event will be 'superb' for myself. I am sure we'll be massive favourites [in the sport betting odds], but we've got to show Cardiff respect, Gerrard continued. It is going to be the game of their lives.
