Basic Pot Odds in PokerIf you are watching a game of Pokerand see a player asking the dealer to spread the pot, they are trying to count how much it contains in relation to the size of the bet they are facing. This process is known as calculating pot odds. Math can be scary to some, and natural for others. Let us look at basic pot odds and see if it terrifies us or not.A good way of viewing pot odds it to understand that the odds will declare the risk, while the pot will tell you the size of your potential reward. When determining pot odds you want to see a favourable outcome. You want the money odds to be greater than the odds of winning the pot. When this happens, the poker fraternity call it a positive expectation, or +EV.Pot odds is an expression of the amount of money contained within the pot during a particular round of action such as pre flop, flop, turn, or river. Pot odds is a ratio of the amount of money in the pot, and the amount it is going to cost you to continue i.e. the size of the bet you are facing. Example: You are playing in a $1/2 No Limit-Hold’em cash game. The action folds to you on the button and you raise to $6. The player in the big blind three-bets to $19 and you decide to call. You are holding [As] [Qs] and the flop is [9s] [8s] [2d]. There is $39 in the pot and the big blind bets $31. So, with $39 in the pot, a bet of $31 facing you, and $31 to call, your pot odds are 2:25 to 1 (39+31/31)
